Leslie Voiers came to our Scholarship Program with an extensive art background, in the textile arts. She has contributed much to the world of hand weaving, as an artist, a teacher, and curator.
It would have seemed natural for her to gravitate to this year’s tapestry class, an opportunity to explore through her most accomplished medium, but instead she chose to attend Carol Ivey’s plein air workshop.
Her interest was to explore “in-depth nuances in color theories and engage with other artists to hone [her] visual experience” – to develop the other facets of her art practice. She chose to attend La Romita in part because of Carol’s powerful reputation in the arts community but also because she was looking for an opportunity like what we offer – immerse herself in art with other artists.
We were inspired by this embrace of Art writ large, and were excited to welcome her.
She found what she sought and spent her time with in a convivial, passionately expressive group, honing skills in a variety of mediums – oil, watercolor, sketch. She said that in particular, she’s learned to be more spontaneous in both drawing and watercolor, and since returning home has maintained a practice of daily drawing to improve her eye and give her new perspective.
[I’ve] learned to be more spontaneous in both drawing and watercolor – both media I tend to resist. Now I am trying to draw daily to hone my eye and of course hand/eye coordination with the paper. Already doing little watercolor paintings [is] giving me a new perspective.
