We are pleased to announce the winners of our 2025 Scholarships: Gabrielle Saveri (Visual Arts), Katie Kemple (Poetry), and Linney Wix (Visual Arts). They will attend workshops this season, and we’ll follow up with their experiences.
Suzi Davidoff of our Scholarship Committee had this to say:
“Our scholarship recipients for 2025 have in common that they are artists interested in expanding their work practice and trying something new. I think their experiences at La Romita this year will provide them opportunities to learn, take chances, and develop their creativity. Each of them will be great additions to their La Romita workshops!”

Woman as Glass
June 24, 2022
In the skyscraper hotel, in a conference
room, in-between sessions about news,
I nod my head at the woman talking,
act like I’m following. I’ve learned
in a panel this week that: I am not
listening. No one listens. One cannot
listen. But I can see beyond this woman’s
head to the skyscraper across the street,
and the tiny charm dangling from a chain
in the breeze, a pendant, a man cleaning
windows. What is it to be worn
by a building? My eyes remove his image
and clasp him around my neck, a tax-
deductible souvenir from this business
trip. On the plane home, I button my coat
over him. What was that woman
trying to tell me though? My heart beats
through the glass to the little man’s body.
A woman is a window, something to stare
beyond, like furniture or the future.
But what comes next? That woman, I didn’t
hear what she said. One cannot listen.
No one listens. I am not listening.
