Throughout the almost 60 years of our existence, we have taken advantage of the sweet summer sun in central Italy to host our workshops and retreats. Our season has run from May through October for decades. One of the questions we hear most frequently is, ‘What happens to La Romita during the off season?’. Up till now, the answer has been that we turn off the lights, close the gates, and come home to the States to work on the next Season.

We’ve long been aware that this “time between” would be valuable to some of our followers. Apart from the glorious chaos of fifteen artists working in the studio, the tranquility of La Romita in between programs  is magical. Artists could use this space and time to explore ideas and pursue independent projects, away from the distractions of every day life,  while also being supported in their activity.

In short, a Residency!

Thanks to certain small experiments over the years, feedback from our artists and teachers, and conversations with workshop participants, we’ve figured out what that should look like and how to implement it, so it’s with great excitement that we announce the opening of the La Romita Residency Program.

We hope many painters, poets, sculptors, musicians, photographers, writers, and other artists will come and take advantage of the opportunity to use La Romita to further their artistic exploration in this new way.
