Palimpsest: “something having usually diverse layers or aspects apparent beneath the surface

The Umbrian hillsides are rich with sights and sounds, fragrances and tastes, the perfect raw materials for generating expressive, multifaceted artwork. Isadora Stowe’s workshop at La Romita will focus on expressing experience through palimpsest, creating “something altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form”.

Isadora will use reflection and collection exercises to help students create personal visual languages with concepts and color choices translated from their sensory experiences.

You will then use your own developed symbolic iconography with a variety of techniques and mediums such as gauche, acrylic and blotted inks to create traces of imagery and surprising layers in your artworks, adding dimension and opening new expressive avenues for further exploration.

With its focus on interpretation and personal experience and how to translate experiences through “altering the original form”, Isadora’s workshop will be perfect for artists looking to expand their expressive repertoire regardless of whether their focus is abstract or representational art.

Being creative is not so much the desire to do something as the listening to that which wants to be done: the diction of materials

About Isadora

Isadora Stowe is a professor, painter, printmaker, and builder of amazing gallery installations made of small concise imagery.

Her work focuses on the narrative of environment translated and coded into complex psychological landscapes. Stowe grew up in the southwest border region, living and working in New Mexico, Texas and Mexico. She credits these experiences for providing a heightened awareness of geographical and political boundaries, and a fascination with the exploration of identity of self and the construction of home in her work.

Isadora is one of 30 Artist Mothers profiled in “The Motherhood of Art Book”, a guide to encourage artists and mothers. She is dedicated to making the world a better place for Artists from all points of origin and serves on many local and national committees and on the board of directors for the Texas Association of Schools of Art (TASA) and BorderSenses, a non-profit which promotes arts in the binational region.
