Jarvis for a memorable exploration of the Umbrian countryside through illustrated journaling and watercolor sketching featuring you as the artist! The world is more than words. Let your creativity capture the fascinating world around you through painting and sketching. Illustrated journaling teaches you to record your daily experiences and preserve memories of your travels in a creative way through pencil sketching, watercolor, acrylic, ink, photography and collage. How is this different than a diary? For one thing, some of the pages don’t have any writing on them at all – just art! Pictures can elicit powerful emotions. You know what they say, “A picture is worth a thousand words!” Each morning we’ll visit a different village to explore the sights, sketch and paint. Susan will be available at all times out in the field or in the studio at La Romita to instruct you and help you create your art. In the afternoon, after a sumptuous lunch prepared by La Romita’s chefs, we’ll begin our studio work. The chapel in the monastery has been transformed into a large work space with individual spots for each student to display their work. Quite often your daily explorations are so much fun that you might want to wait until you return to the monastery to paint or sketch from your photos. It’s easy to see how this trip is exciting, even for a non-painter! That’s right. You don’t have to be an artist to participate in this Illustrated Journaling workshop. You can learn many ways to express yourself in your musings. As you write about the sounds, sights and smells around you – discover how to illustrate your writing. Art is a learned skill. If you are worried that you aren’t artistic, remember that your illustration doesn’t have to look realistic. You can use abstract design and watercolor washes to enhance your journal. Color and pattern will help you to remember your favorite places! Come see how it’s done! At the end of your workshop you will return home with a journal full of beautiful paintings, masterful writings and sketches of the Umbrian countryside; a memorable record of your journaling adventure at La Romita!
