INNER AND OUTER VIEWS – with Carol Ivey

Developing your own creative perspective in Umbria

Every artwork is a series of choices made by the artist. This workshop considers the artist’s viewpoint both of the scene and of the means by which the scene is constructed on paper or canvas, and of the intention and intuition behind it.

Composition, space, and color will be the key components of this workshop. We will take inspiration from Bonnard’s way of framing a scene by looking through a window or over a balustrade of a terrace and also look to Hockney’s recent landscapes and how he leads us into his drawings of dynamic texture and pattern. We will take note of how Van Gogh’s pen and ink drawings clarify space and animate his scenes of the countryside, while Italian artist Morandi distills his landscape and buildings down into emotive shapes and color. We will also consider various Modernist and contemporary artists’ approaches to abstracting or symbolizing forms and flattening or manipulating space.

This workshop is designed for participants with varied art experience, from the curious to the serious artist. Activities will combine drawing in a sketch-book and plein air mixed-media, or oil on panel in more developed works. We will work on-site at various locations we visit, and at La Romita, both on the grounds and in the studio.

Presentations and exercises in the studio will focus on composition and expressive use of color, as well as basic drawing issues, including perspective. Carol will work with each individual to define and refine their personal vision, clearly making each artwork uniquely their own. In this workshop, the goal is to further develop skills and unfold new expressive pathways.

About CAROL

Carol Ivey is an artist of vision, both inner and outer. For the past 25 years her painting practice, both on canvas and with watercolor, has been based on working from observation with light and space being of primary importance in her still life and interiors. In her current work, her love of color has taken more subtle nuanced hues; in her more distant past she worked with a rich and vibrant palette creating abstract paintings. Because Carol has a high regard for the history of painting, she points to compelling examples through art history to communicate art concepts. She is excited to be teaching her first workshop with La Romita.

Fort Worth-based Carol Ivey, received a BA in studio art from the University of Texas at Austin. Ivey has taught college and adult education classes, as well as numerous workshops (three in Europe). She has also served as juror on exhibitions across North Texas. She was a finalist in the Hunting Art Prize in Houston in 2009, 2013, and 2015, and has won multiple awards in the annual Historic Fort Worth, Inc exhibition. In 2023, Carol was awarded an artist retreat by the Morris Graves Foundation in Northern California. Her work is found in many private and corporate collections, and is represented by the Hunt Gallery in San Antonio, Texas.
