“Art creation is a way to give myself a voice without speaking.”
Rita Carpenter is passionate about art and travel, always taking the opportunity to capture, express – and teach! – the excitement of being abroad through travel journaling. Since 2018 she has been organizing art-travel trips where artists can share the joy of creating.
Watercolor is her medium of choice, a medium that can be wild and free or tightly controlled – she loves the challenge in finding the balance. “Art creation is a way to give myself a voice without speaking”
Her workshops are great for all levels – Rita has plenty to teach a novice while keeping it fun, but also has some tricks up her sleeve to help more experienced artists find something new in themselves. Mostly, she’s inspired by the surroundings and opportunities to be found abroad, the beauty of the people and places to which she takes her groups.
Each day, you’ll head out and spend your time exploring, photographing, and absorbing the character of each destination. Back at the studio, you will capture the memories and impressions from those explorations using watercolor and collage, with photographs for reference. You will learn basics about materials, composition, and design layouts for your journal, and return home not just with a record of the places you visited, but a creative expression of your experiences there.
Rita Carpenter is passionate about photography and has been for most of her life. In 2008, Rita began painting in watercolor. Without formal education in art, she attended many international art adventures with Karlyn Holman. This is where she began and eventually fell in love with watercolor. Rita loves that watercolor can be wild and free or it can be tightly controlled. She feels the challenge lies in finding the balance. She loves to add collage, pastel, or acrylic to watercolor to get more texture and to add personal meaning.
Rita has been involved with the Janesville Art League for many years. During this time, she held many JAL Board positions: Secretary, United Art Alliance Liaison, Co-President in restoration of oil paintings and Vice-President of events.
