PAINT ANYTHING WITH CONFIDENCE – with Nancy Tankersley

In this workshop, Nancy takes you from painting still life to landscape and even figures. While concentrating on understanding basic shapes and light source, you will learn that most representational painting is based on these two concepts and there is no need to limit yourself on subject matter! Drawing is important and Nancy will show you simple ways to check the accuracy of your drawing. You will explore ways of gaining information for your paintings through observational painting, working with photographic reference, journaling, and memory exercises.
Nancy works in both oils and acrylic, but is open to working with artists in any medium. She believe that technique is an ever evolving journey (and best learned though personal experimentation) , but understanding the underlying principals of how to observe and translate your observations to a 2-D surface is key to becoming a good painter. You will work with a limited choice of colors so that you gain mastery over your paint mixing before adding extra pigments to your palette.
Nancy is excited to explore the towns and countryside of Umbria, meet the people of the region and learn about their culture, and of course, sample the food and wine! All of these experiences gained through travel will eventually find their way back into your paintings. Opening your eyes and observing the buildings, the vegetation and the shapes of your surroundings will do much to improve your understanding of shape as well as the specificity of shapes. Often we over concentrate on details when it is the large shapes that tell the story.
A typical day will begin with a lesson and sometimes a demo after breakfast, either in the studio or on location. I hope to have an even balance between studio time and outdoor painting, but I also like to be flexible depending upon the weather and interests of the group. I also like to allow for unsupervised studio time with after dinner critique sessions. Certain days we will travel to surrounding towns where we will take in the culture, sketch, do small plein air paintings or just take photos.Above all I hope you leave with the confidence to paint anything you desire to paint, and a suitcase full of wonderful La Romita memories
