Retrospective Online – with Ken O’Connell

This summer Ken finally responded to a growing chorus of requests to mount a retrospective of his work. It opened with a quite limited public July 3rd at the Karin Clarke Gallery in Eugene Oregon. In order to make his opening available to more people we collaborated with Mark Stafford and the A/V people from the University to record a high quality video.
We will be hosting an aperitivo with Ken on Tuesday September 1s at 5:00 pm (Pacific time). With Ken as our co-host, we will present the premier of the video and show also two of Ken’s early, ground-breaking films, “Chips in Space” and “Oregon Country”.
We are asking $25 for the invitation to the Zoom meeting.

Kenneth O’Connell, reinvents himself in many art forms. For the last 20 years people associated Ken with Sketchbooks and Workshops along the Oregon Coast and in Italy. But he was also a painter, photographer, printmaker, animator, potter, and pastel and charcoal artist. He worked and taught all these art forms and was Head of the University of Oregon’s Fine and Applied Art Department for 12 years.
Ken’s sketchbooks are amazing and he’s filled over 94, but the focus of the current exhibition at the Karin Clarke Gallery features his other abilities to explore and give ideas form in many media. There are watercolors done in Long Beach while in the US Navy; Brush ink drawings done while teaching at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington; brown sepia figure drawings; black and white photos of a pottery in Japan, farmland near Salem, and an old ranch in Eastern Oregon; woodcut, silkscreen prints and a tiny beautiful brown ink drawing of the Ponte Vecchio Bridge in Florence, Italy; plus many other interesting works to discover.
Most people only know a part of Ken’s work as an artist and viewing this exhibition will show you a creative mind in many phases of development.
